Creation Process
-
Three distinct stages exist for every composition:
-
Sound design
-
Melody / harmony writing
-
Arrangement
-
-
Every song is constructed from reusable, granular motifs. The motifs are process driven; each stage has its own unique set.
-
Sound design motifs are born from synth presets / channel strips I have put together. I never reuse identical configurations; each song has parameter deviations which contribute an organic evolution of style over time.
-
Melody motifs are driven by the physical instruments I've learned to play. Cello, being the first instrument I picked up, drives many of my choices.
-
Arrangement motifs emerge from the genre(s) I have most recently been listening to. As the least granular stage, formulaic song structures emerge easily. Special care must be taken to not adhere too closely to established forms.
-
A song is never finished but reaches a stopping place when my intentions have been summarized succinctly.
-
I aim for a rich and cohesive minimalism.
